.

Before You Travel: Checklist Documentation

First of all, we shall look at the most important thing, your travel documents. The lack of one of them may result in the cancellation or delay of the flight.

  • Good Passport (at least 6 months validity)
  • Air Ticket (printed copy or a digital copy)
  • Visa (visa or e-Visa confirmation)
  • Travel Insurance (where needed)
  • National Identity Card (NIC)
  • Hotel-booking and schedule
  • Onward/Return ticket
  • Vaccine against COVID-19 (in case it is necessary)
  • Printed and electronical copies of all significant documents

Tip by GN Holidays: When you pack your carry-on only take copies of the important paperwork and send the electronic scanned versions via email to yourself.

What to Pack and What to Leave: Packing Tips

The golden rule of packing especially when it is your first trip: pack light but smart. The airlines are limited in terms of the sizes or allowances of the baggage and exceeding the limit is another cost to you at the airport.

Checking-in: What to bring:

  • Clothes that make one comfortable (dependent on climate)
  • Toiletries (not more than 100ml in carry goods)
  • Shoes/slippers
  • Spare chargers/ adapters
  • Prescription emergency medicines
  • Gifts or things to relatives

Packing What to Carry-On:

  • Passport & tickets
  • Power bank (up to a certain extent)
  • Headphones
  • Snacks
  • One set of change of clothing (in case of delays)
  • Sanitizer, face mask, wet wipes

Don’t Pack:

  • Hand luggage of liquids containing more than 100ml
  • Needles and sharp items (scissors, razors)

Aerosols, lighter or power bank in a checked luggage

What to Expect at Airport Tips

This is what normally occurs in the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) for an international flight

  • Come 3-4 hours to the flight.
  • Take a flight to the counter of your airlines, display your ticket and passport, and you are presented with a boarding pass.
  • Go to another immigration station where your passport and visa is checked.
  • Security check-up is necessary- metal objects, belt, laptop and liquids should be taken out to pass under the scanner.
  • Once you are through security, go to your departure gate and await the boarding call.
  • After the boarding begins, stay on, display your passport, and boarding pass, once more and you are on your way by air!

GN Holidays Tip: It is usually very important to recheck the gate and departure time at the display boards as gates usually change.

International Newly Travelers

In case you are heading to destinations such as Dubai, Malaysia, the UK among others then these are some additional tips:

  • Get to understand the currency exchange and change a little money beforehand.
  • Take your foreign debit/credit card.
  • Familiarize yourself with local regulations, practices and emergency contacts.
  • There is Google Translate and Google Maps which can be downloaded and used offline.
  • Switch-on international roaming or buy a SIM in your destination.
